Doctor La

Vaginal Post Partum Information

HOSPITAL STAY

24 to 48 hours following delivery unless you are experiencing a medical problem.

DISCHARGE INFORMATION

Upon discharge, you will be given orders provided by Dr. La.  If you are experiencing pain, you may take up to 800m g of Ibuprofen, an over-the-counter medication, every 6 hours.  Dr. La may also provide you with an order for Tylenol with codeine which can be taken as needed.  It is ok to take both of these medications together if necessary.   If you are breastfeeding, Dr. La also recommends that you continue taking your prenatal vitamins as well as an additional calcium supplement daily.

STITCHES

  • You may have discomfort for about 2 weeks.
  • Stitches dissolve on their own and do not need to be removed
  • Depending on the type of suture use, you may feel some of the material for 1-4 weeks

SHOWERING AND BATHING

  • Dr. La recommends that you shower only for the first 2 weeks so any suture material does not dissolve too quickly and any tear is allowed to heal.
  • After 2 weeks, you can begin taking baths
  • If you did not have stitches, you can take a bath right away.

EXERCISE

  • Few activity restrictions, except sexual intercourse, after a vaginal delivery
  • Listen to your body and don’t do anything that hurts
